Travel by Bus

The easiest and least expensive way to get around the Central Andes region, which is made up of the provinces of Pichincha, Cotopaxi, Tungurahua, Bolivar and Chimborazo, is by bus. Since there are relatively few major land routes in Ecuador, taking a bus headed for a larger destination will allow you to stop at other attractions along the way. Moving from Quito to Guaranda in Bolivar province takes almost 6 hours by bus, but if you rent a car, the trip is likely to just be 5 hours.

Quito Bus transport

Public transport is an easy way of getting around the capital city of Quito. The Trolebus, Metrobus, and Ecovia run north-south up and down the east and west sides of the city, on 10 de Agosto, Avenida de las Americas/La Patria, and 6 de Diciembre. These integrated transport systems have dedicated lanes and are often the fastest means of getting around the city. City buses go east-west as well as north south, and reach nearly all the places not covered by the integrated system. Placards on the front of the buses announce the route of the bus, as do the bus assistants who lean out the window to shout out a list of destinations to potential passengers. Fares for Quito public transport are $0.25 per ride.

Traveling by bus in Ecuador Central Andes

Buses in Ecuador run through the Central Andes, which is very convenient. For example, a bus to Ambato would also take you by Latacunga and the entrance to the Cotopaxi National Park. There are almost 60 bus companies that leave from Quito to take people along the Avenue of Volcanoes to the south. Departing from Carcelen bus station in the north of the city, are buses to to Cayambe, Tabacundo, Otavalo and further north. There are almost 15 bus companies that run these routes.

To the south, buses leave from the Quitumbe bus terminal in the south of Quito and fan out to nearly every bus-accessible destination. The Quitumbe terminal may be reached by taking the Trole to its final stop, which takes an hour from the La Mariscal area. Prices for buses average at around $1 an hour, and tickets should be bought in advance in the terminal, especially if you will be traveling during a feriado (holiday), because seats will fill quickly then.
