5. Canoa – this laid-back fishing village is located in the province of Manabi, and while it is an increasingly popular destination, it still has a relaxed vibe and is not overrun by tourists. It’s an excellent spot for beginners, with surf lessons and board rental readily available year round. Canoa is known for its chill surfer scene. Beach break is both left and right, and the medium-sized swells are from north, west, and south, with the best swell being from the north or north west. The bottom is sandy. The beach rarely becomes crowded, although there are more people generally on weekends. Canoa may be reached in six hours by taking a bus from the Quitumbre bus terminal in Quito.
6. La Bellaca – this lesser known location in the province of Manabi features one of the fastest and longest waves in Ecuador. On a good day it can be ridden around 300 m., and the swell is north, northwest or southwest, with the ideal being to the south west. The beach is nearly always empty, even during high season and holidays. La Bellaca can be reached in car by driving south from Bahia for approximately 20 minutes.
7. Rio Chico – another lesser known surfing location, this Manabi beach features a very fast, fun left point break and has a friendly atmosphere without being overly crowded. Swell directions are from the south and southwest. The beach is located in the town of Rio Chico near to Puerto Lopez, in the Piquros Patas Azules Hotel. To surf you must enter the hotel and pay a small fee, which entitles you to parking (as needed) and use of the showers.
8. Mar Bravo- located 15km from Salinas in the province of Santa Elena, this beach attracts tourists for its spectacular sunsets. Its waters are quite dangerous but that is exactly what makes this beach ideal for surfers. Beautiful landscapes surround this beach and birds contribute to this beauty. In Mar Bravo there are about 100 different bird species registered.
9. Punta Carnero- this beach is located only 10 minutes to the south of Salinas and is part of the province of Santa Elena. The sea here is a little rough; however, the sunsets are spectacular. Tourists prefer this beach for walking, admiring the sunsets and fishing but above all it is the chosen destination of many surfers. Punta Carnero has been chosen several times to be the venue of surf competitions not only on a national level but also on an international level.
