Quito is in second place among the Top 10 in the Best in Travel 2016 guide. The publication is part of the prestigious Lonely Planet organization. The capital city of Ecuador is the only Latin American city that is on the list.
The guide includes the 10 top rated countries, regions, cities and destinations to visit in 2016. The collection points "the places where travelers will head to next year, but the ones our team determined that must be visited”, said Tom Hall, Lonely Planet Editorial Director.
According to Lonely Planet, Quito was chosen for its contrasts between the colonial town (old historic town) that houses convents, churches, museums, squares and its modern infrastructure in the north-central business and shopping district of the city.
The article highlights specific attractions, such as the Carondelet Palace, the Capila del Hombre (Chapel of Man) - a museum dedicated to the artist Oswaldo Guayasamin - other museums of the historic center, the Teleferico (Cableway) that goes up to Pichincha volcano, and the Middle of the World (Equator).
It also mentions the Convent of San Diego as a strange, yet wonderful site. Similarly, the article highlights several luxury hotels and restaurants that exist in the Ecuadorian capital city.
This list is the result of a combination of very different destinations, focusing on various types of tourists and experiences: adventure, culture, events and family or gastronomic travel, according to the Municipality of Quito.
The guide, made by publishers, guides authors and travel community, does not exactly include the destinations that receive more travelers, but it mentions the places "globetrotters" should considered for travelling in the near future. This is because it is a recently developed destination, which has just been incorporated into the traveler's map.
