San Cristóbal Island

Galapagos Islands

San Cristobal is located in the east side of the archipelago. It is one of the oldest islands in Galapagos. It is the province’s capital and its political center. Its too populated centers are the main town of the county, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno and the parish El Progreso. It has several basic places that posses great deal of beauty. Its fauna is characterized by the great number of sea lions that are present in the urban area.

This island hosts frigates, sea lions, Galapagos turtles, Red-footed boobies, blue-footed boobies, marine iguanas, dolphins and seagulls that are characteristic of Galapagos. Its vegetation includes Calandrinia galapagosa, Lecocarpus darwinii and trees such as Lignum vitae or matazarno. In the nearby waters we may find sharks, stingrays and lobsters. Near Puerto Baquerizo Moreno City there are touristic places, such as Centro Tijereteras, a colony of frigates gathering and a statue of Charles Darwin, that marks the original place where he set foot for the 1st time when he arrived to Galapagos Islands during the 2nd trip of the HMS Beagle, on September 16th, 1835. La Lobería, a sea lions colony, is located at 10 minutes by car from downtown.

Useful Data

It is the capital of the province. Near the pier a great number of sea lions may be observed. It has the largest freshwater lake in the archipelago, El Junco lagoon. La Galapaguera, a station dedicated to the breeding and refuge of giant turtles is located near there.

Accesibility

By sea: from Santa Cruz Island a person may arrive by using a cabotage boat.
By air: from the Continental mainland arriving to the city’s airport.

Approximately 1000 kilometers from the Continental mainland. It is a one hour and 45 minutes flight and a 2 hours trip from Puerto Ayora.
