Definitely resettled in 1547 as a commercial ship yard and port to the service of the Spanish crown, under the name “Santiago de Guayaquil”, it has served as the main point of Ecuador’s economy. It has been the location of great revolutions and insurgencies through its history, being recognized as the 1st Ecuadorian city that became definitively independent from Spain in 1820.
It became a part of the Republic of Ecuador in 1830 as a prominent economical and political pivoting cornerstone. The “Perla del Pacífico” (“Pacific Pearl”) is a place for of particular enchantment that has charmed Ecuadorians as well as foreigners, the city is a mix of many cultures and each one of them has contributed to make of Guayaquil what it is today.
