It is said that Manta was founded in 1534 by Francisco Pacheco, and in 1563 by the president of the Real Audiencia de Quito, Hernando de Santillán who ordered that it be founded with the name San Pablo de Manta. The city was the port chosen by Charles Marie de la Condamine when he arrived to Ecuador leading the French geodesic mission, with the purpose of measuring the accuracy of the location of the equinoctial line in 1735.
