Ecuador is blessed, geographically speaking, you can tell by its four worlds compiling all in one place and really close. On must see features are its lakes and lagoons. And the Andes range do know about water natural reservoirs. Scattered all over the place, they are the perfect scenarios to enjoy nature, and its flora and fauna, in Cuicocha, a naturally beautiful destination.
If we talk about lakes and lagoons we must necessarily speak of the province of Imbabura, which is known precisely as the «Province of Lakes», this name was well earned after the abundance of lakes and lagoons throughout its territory. Yahuarcocha, Mojanda, Piñan, San Pablo, San Marcos, Puruhanta and Cuicocha stand as the most important ones. And it is precisely the last one, Cuicocha that we‘ll write about this time.
Known as «The Lagoon of the Gods» by locals, it’s a volcanic formation born in an eruption more than 3,000 years ago. Nowadays getting to this blue round lagoon is very easy. It is located 7,5 miles from Cotacachi, from where you can take a bus to Quiroga for 25 cents, and from this place you can rent another car that will charge around 4 dollars for the ride.
Entrance to the lagoon and complex is free and opens from Monday to Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Once here, there are many activities that you can do.
Our first stop will be the Interpretation Center, an accessible learning site with information on the Reserve, as well as a botanical garden that shows all the species of flora tin this protected area.
Right next to the interpretation Center, you’ll find the lagoon, which is located at 3068 MAS with a 3200 m diameter by 2300 wide, something that makes it of the largest in our country.
This place transmits peacefulness. Som of the trails around the lake are strategically far from the cities. Here you can only hear the relaxing sound of wind crashing into the water, making some tiny waves. Here boat rides are permitted and you can take an up close look the two marvelous islets in the middle of the lake.
For the more adventurous type, we recommend taking the hiking route looping around the lagoon. It is an 8 mile self-guided trail for it has the proper signage. But remember to hire professional guidance for a better educational insight on the land.
No more to say, this is a perfect place for a full day adventure in the middle of nature, and thus be able to recharge your energy for the daily hustle of the city life.
