What to do

Antisana

Andes

Located in the East Andes Cordillera, 90 km (56 miles) or 2 hrs drive from Quito, take the “Ruta Viva”, then the “E35” to Pintag. From there, the road to the Ecological reserve is in good shape.
Antisana is Ecuador’s fourth highest peak, known as one of the most difficult to climb, due to its very active glaciers and crevasses, which do not allow for a fixed climbing route.
From the Reserve’s security station, there are several different routes, of varying difficulty, which follow “La Mica” lagoon and are suitable for hikers and nature lovers. They feature great views of the lagoon, the surrounding mountains and, on clear days, spectacular sights of Antisana. The weather can change very quickly, so waterproof clothes are strongly recommended.
To reach the summit takes at least two days and requires adequate climbing and crevasse rescue gear.  Previous mountain-climbing experience is recommended. To conquer this mountain, you’ll need a four-wheel drive to reach the Volcano base, and two special permits: one from the “Ministerio del Ambiente” (+593 2) 398 7600 and the other from EPMAPS (+593 2) 299 4400.
