Located in the West Andes Cordillera, 46 km (29 miles) or 1 hour drive from Riobamba, passing the Rural Parish of Licán towards “El Arenal”.
Chimborazo, an extinct volcano, is the highest peak in Ecuador, its location along the equatorial bulge making its summit the furthest point of Earth’s surface from the center of the Earth and the closest to the sun.
Chimborazo has four summits; Nicolás Martínez, Politécnica, Veintimilla and the highest – Whymper – at 6,268 m (20,564 ft.)
The trail which leads from the “Hermanos Carrel” hut to the “Whymper” hut can be covered in 45 to 60 minutes by non-experienced climbers and features great landscapes as well as opportunities to watch vicuñas (a relative of the llama), in their natural habitat. Warm clothes and good walking shoes are recommended.
It takes at least two days to reach the summit. Appropriate technical equipment and climbing gear, such as crampons, ice axe and crevasse rescue gear are a must. Mountain-climbing experience is recommended.
